We have just been fortunate enough that our good friend Julia (from Greenhouse Interiors) introduced us to these incredible sculptural palm pods by Antoinette Ferwerda; a Melbourne based artist and the creator of Ferwerda Art.

Antoinette is inspired by people, nature, science, history, culture and tradition. She see's colour, movement and design everywhere; water movement; light reflections; in her daughter's striking line drawings; the colour combinations her son chooses with pencils.

These incredible pieces of Art will be arriving into the store this week.... aren't we lucky!

At the framers as we speak and due in store tomorrow afternoon these collage artworks are seriously magic. Only available in a very few select stores in Melbourne we are excited to add these to the walls.

Pia Blair is the lass wielding the scissors and glue stick behind the label "Littlelandofpia"

Pia an Australian artist living in Vietnam who likes to collect images and paper ephemera from times gone by. She collects her bits from offbeat places in Vietnam and on her travels beyond. She then artfully arranges her finds along with screen-printing and spray painted stencils to tell kooky and humorous stories about what takes place in this little land of hers. She likes to enhance a sense of nostalgia in her collage work and to layer images and textures to unify the compositions.

If you are looking for a particular colour or a certain theme Pia is happy to oblige and will custom create a little world just for you. So mind your step, make yourself at home. Put your feet up, grab a little somethin’ to wet your whistle with and enjoy your time in the littlelandofpia.

Last year while doing the rounds of the trade shows, we came across these fabulous Cumulus pendants, it was instant love!

The brilliant design team at Enoki in South Australia, are responsible for these gems and we can't thank them enough.

Available in 5 fabrics and a range of Children's fabrics, the pendants are constructed with a Tasmanian Oak frame and come flat packed in their own (equally well designed) box. With 3 sizes to choose from 460mm / 660mm / 860mm (diameter) you're sure to find the perfect fit for your space.

The lights take a maximum 100w globe, with recommendations from Enoki that they be installed by a licensed electrician after assembly and that you only dry clean the shades.

We love small Australian businesses that put a big emphasis on being environmentally responsible.

Ourlieu (pronounced our-lee-oo, meaning place or space) is a homewares company that is setting a new standard for production and manufacturing of textiles.

They're approach to design is.. " about minimising the materials we use and obtaining what we need to use from only environmentally responsible sources"... Ourlieu use 100% organic cotton and recycled paper in their products, and choose to use cushion inserts that are made from recycled plastic bottles (love it!) Any printed items used, such as swing tags, are produced using soy ink using made through a sustainability-conscious printer.

As well as being good to the earth, Ourlieu also has great design with its new range called 'Gypsy Coast'. With a gorgeous summer palette, the range is easy to mix and match through their use of fun prints, florals and fauna. And to top it all off the Ourlieu range is really affordable, with cushion prices starting at $60.

Like all great design, born out of need and necessity, Soludos is the brian child of Nick Brown, a New York local with a love for all things summer.

Unable to find a shoe to fit his lifestyle of travel and sunshine, and discovering friends were resorting to stocking up on espadrilles overseas, Nick was inspired to design what he could not find.

Made for good times, for relaxing, for the beach, the street, for weekends (and weekdays) Soludos are the perfect fit for our Australian summer ways.

Based on the traditional mediterranean espadrille, Nick has given these little beauties a natural jute sole, breathable cotton upper and a thin rubber protective base. Because they are made of natural fibre, slight stretching will occur, so we suggest you but them snug and let them relax as you do.

Six Week Boutique

The world is filled with clever, inspiring people but some seem have have been standing closer to the front of the line when God was handing out talent... Tamara Maynes is one of these people.

Making craft cool again, was no doubt unintentional, but is definitely what Tamara has achieved through her online store "Six Week Boutique".

A look through her little boutique will open the door on the lost art of Cross Stitch and Macrame, but offered with a modern edge and understated coolness.

Be inspired to to create your own craft project with a cross stitch kit of ransom letters or a vintage motorcycle. My absolute favourite is the turquoise macrame owl, so reminiscent of a 1970's childhood. Also on offer are Union Jack patchwork cushions and copies of indie mag SoHi, of which Tamara is craft editor.

The Six Week Boutique is not the only project this clever little cookie has on the go; Tamara also writes, styles and makes custom prop for editorials, you would have seen her handy work in the pages of Inside Out and Real Living magazines.

Free To Be Kids...

In our blog we often write about great design, new products and our latest finds, but humanitarian issues, especially those involving kids is something very close to our hearts.

After travelling to India a number of times, Jess was there only a matter of weeks ago, we have seen first hand the poverty and unimaginable circumstances too many of their children live in. It is quite an overwhelming feeling, wanting to help but not knowing where or how to begin...

Enter "Free To Be Kids"...

Last week I had the pleasure of hearing Jeanette Thompson speak at our local church.

This remarkable young woman moved from Brisbane to Kolkata, India, early last year to be the founding project manager of the "Free To Be Kids" Child Rescue and Development Centre. Through her selfless work, Jeanette has seen children being rescued and set free from abuse and exploitation. Some stories she shared were of children who had been in bonded labour or about to be sold into the sex trade, the photos of their precious faces moved me to tears.

FreeToBeKids was founded in 2005 by Benj Geerling, who felt compelled to make a difference in India after being offered a young girl for a few dollars on the streets. This not-for-profit organisation has a small team working in Melbourne, supporting three safe houses in India. By partnering with local organisations, FreeToBeKids is able to be involved in the rescue of these precious little ones, providing them with a safe and happy future... something that many of us take for granted.

I know it may feel like the market is flooded with scented candles, but we have finally found the one candle that stands out. After holding off almost 12 months to stock The Assembly Hall with the right candle brand, we over are joyed to have tracked down Gascoigne & King luxury Scented Candles.

Sydney based duo, Bronwyn Gascoigne and Dean King began their company in 2008 with the aim of creating a high quality product line that was luxurious without being taxing on the environment. Add to this their desire to keep production and packaging supply local, and you have got yourself quite a task...

Nether the less, the pair have risen to the occasion creating Gascoigne & King Candles.

Each one of their heavenly scented candles is made by hand in their Surry Hills studio. Using sustainably farmed eco-soy wax, every candle is made to order which reduces wastage and ensures you get the best possible product.

With an 80 hour burn time and a scent that fills the room, lingering for hours, these candles are well worth their $55 price tag. The list of fragrances includes Pear Angely's, Mount Fuji Rice Flower, and Love Vanilla to name but a few.

We are in love with these beautiful creations and i have no problem in predicting the same fate for you once tried.

Hallelujah! My prayers have finally been answered and someone has brought back the beanbag! and not the old vinyl sort that you might remember sticking too as a child, but a beautiful, luxurious creation made from leather and buffalo hide.

These little beauties are hand made with love just outside Melbourne. They can be ordered in 19 different shades of soft leather & 1 shade of gorgeous Buffalo hide.

Nelson & Rose beanbags contain an inner liner, as well as safety locking zips on both the leather cover & the liner to stop any of those tiny beans escaping. All the seams are double stitched with upholstery-strength nylon.

The turn around time to own one of your own is roughly 2 weeks, with custom size orders taken and special request textured leathers also able to be sourced.

The corrected grain leather used in these beanbags is very durable and can be wiped down with a damp cloth when dirty. The Buffalo hide is really soft and will attain a beautiful worn look over time. The occasional use of a leather conditioner is recommended to keep your bag in tip top shape.

One of my greatest hurdles in styling interior editorials is finding affordable, cool artwork to feature in the stories. In the past I've worked a lot for magazines such as Real Living, where my task was to produce

gorgeous but achievable interiors, with budget being a major part of the brief. I struggled to find artwork that didn't look like I'd swiped it from the local Motor Inn or had to sell my first born to

pay for it!

This Sydney based company have come up with the simple online concept of clicking on the artwork that appeals to you, selecting the size and stock that fits, then getting the postman to deliver it to your door! brilliant!

I Need Nice Things also produce bespoke art and one-off pieces for major projects and refurbishments. Definitely something to consider if you're a designer or architect or doing some major renovations.

I've worked with a lot of great photographers in my years of styling but its rare come across someone who excels in so many areas. As an editorial and advertising photographer, Armelle Habib has formed her own distinct style as she captures food, interiors and people.

After many years of traveling abroad and developing a love and appreciation for art and design, Armelle settled in Melbourne and completed a Bachelor of Arts in Commercial Photography at RMIT. As is quiet evident in these images, she has an amazing understanding of light and colour and a unique way of conveying a story in each shot.

i recently had the honor of working with Armelle on an interiors editorial we shot on Jessie's (my business partner & the other half of The Assembly Hall) home here in Williamstown. We're always excited to share new finds that we've added to our little collection of treasures. Imandeco is one such find. The brainchild of French designer Michele Nexer, Imandeco is a range of brightly coloured occasional furniture, perfect for both indoor and outdoor use.

Each piece is crafted from a light-weight polypropylene fabric, braided by African tribes people. The range includes French kitsch armchairs, side tables, kids chairs, floor mats and laundry baskets. The pieces are strong and sturdy as well as being extremely light. The colour palette is mind blowing, ranging from electric pinks and greens to earthy browns. Lucky for us (and you!) we've just had a delivery of Imandeco arrive at The Hall this week.

Depending on which day and which state you are in when you read this, a post on designer beach umbrellas may seem completely irrelevant to your life right now. But never the less, it is still summer and regardless of a constant down pour of water, i really wanted to share these amazing sun umbrellas with you.
Basil Bangs (LOVE the name!) are a Bondi based company, creating classic design, high quality beach umbrellas that have a hint of a by-gone era. The fringing detail of the Calypso design reminds me of a 1950's Miami pool party, so completely gorgeous...
What i also love about these, apart from the amazing colours, is how well they are made. The hinge is a patent design made from chrome plated die-cast aluminium & marine grade plastic. They come with their own bag with shoulder strap, which makes life very easy when carting them across the sand.

Taking our beloved Melbourne icons and calling on the talents of young local designers, Natasha has created a range of extremely cool homewares that double as high end souvenirs! Brilliant!

The range includes cushions, artwork, tea towels and mugs, incorporating childhood favourites such as the skipping girl, Nylex sign and the good old milk bar. The artwork and tea towels come in tube packaging with a little bit of history about the icon on the front!

We have in our hot little hands, both THE DOTS and The E27 pendants featured here. THE DOTS are a family of 5 round hooks carefully crafted from first class oak wood. They can be arranged on a wall in any configuration. It almost seems a shame to cover them up but what a happy place to hang your coat or bag.

Earlier in the year when we began this project that was to become "The Assembly Hall", we took a trip to India. We were only there for 10 days but experienced such a scale of emotion. We found ourselves in awe, elated, saddened and moved to help in some way. We made some amazing purchases and but more importantly we contributed to many small businesses and formed on-going relationships so we can continue to help.

Our absolute favourite things in the whole world right now are Moonbaskets. Lucky for us we have three hanging in our store which we can ogle over all day, they are truly gorgeous!
Moonbasket was created by Cape Town designer Dani De Roy and crochet lover Laura Summs. While they're creations use all natural braids and strings, the project is one that supports they're local community (which makes us love them even more)
Each shade is lovingly hand stitched using the age old craft of crochet and comes in 3 different sizes, colors and stitches....

O-Check Design Graphics are a Korean based outfit that have delighted us with their environmentally conscious stationary range. Many of the products are produced using recycled paper, natural fabrics, wood and soy ink.
The range is inspired by travel, books & music and combine vintage aesthetic with fresh new design ideas. The name O-Check comes from the Korean word "gongcheck" which means "a book with nothing inside".... quite fitting!
